McLeish calls for urgent road repairs in Woods Point

Community complaints and concerns about the deteriorating quality of the roads in and out of Woods Point comes as Labor’s State Budget 2021-22 offers limited support for regional and rural road maintenance.

Speaking in parliament, State Liberal Member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish outlined the condition and dangers of the road, calling on the minister to action urgent repairs.

Ms McLeish said, “I was frankly appalled at the state of the roads when I visited Woods Point community recently and am concerned for people’s safety.”

These main roads are used by locals, visitors, heavy trucks and 4WDs as they are the only roads in and out of Woods Point.

Ms McLeish continues, “Too many residents told me their cars are regularly damaged from corrugations and people avoid driving at night. On top of that, they are cheesed off that road side slashing has not taken place for 10 years.”

“The road is so bumpy and hazardous that it impacts on the safe transport of patients in ambulances. Too many times, they’ve had to use choppers for transport instead.”

Potholes and sand corrugations plague the roads, making them dangerous and slippery. Corrugation maintenance could have easily been conducted during last year’s COVID-19 restrictions period, but the opportunity was missed by the Andrews Labor Government.

“Woods Point community members are desperate for the government to urgently begin bituminising at least 2kms of road here each year,” Ms McLeish concludes.
