McLeish calls for Healesville- Koo Wee Rup Road repair

Roads across the Yarra Valley are in a very ordinary condition with no promise of repair in sight from the State Labor Government.

Speaking in Parliament, State Liberal Member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish called on the Minister for Roads to ensure urgency around the necessary repairs on the Healesville- Koo Wee Rup Road between Healesville and Woori Yallock.

Comparing driving the road to being on a small boat at sea, Ms McLeish said, “I drive this road frequently and most recently I counted four rough surface signs and there were lots of dodgy parts of the road. The camber is all over the place.”

“People have contacted me on Facebook about this road and said, ‘Well, fancy being in a truck on that. It’s absolutely a lot worse’, ‘Try riding a motorbike around here’, ‘Lower speed limits and "rough surface" signs are NOT the way to fix this road’ and ‘This is a disgrace. ‘

The Healesville- Koo Wee Rup Road is the major road and a popular bypass heading to Gippsland through Warragul. It can be tricky for drivers at the best of times as there are a series of tight bends and difficult corners and carries all manner of traffic including trucks, horse floats, caravans, and cars.

Ms McLeish continues, “Throw in some potholes, loose bitumen, faded lines, crumbling shoulders on a roller coaster of a road and it’s a recipe for disaster.”

“The patch job repairs never seem to last long and only offer a short relief for drivers. Resurfacing needs to be done before winter weather kicks in and the potholes become a lot worse.”

“Reducing the speed limit and putting up signs will not fix the problem. People are really fed up and want to see real work,” Ms McLeish concludes.
