Bus stop win for Merton community

Merton bus stop is set for an upgrade, making the pickup, drop off area safer for passengers.

State Liberal Member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish said this is a great win for the community.

“At the most recent community meeting, Merton residents told me that the bus stop on Maroondah Highway, opposite the service station, is inadequate for passengers.”

Action was needed, and on the community’s behalf Ms McLeish lobbied for improvements to be made.

“Safety is a real concern at this bus stop. Passenger’s waiting for the bus are required to stand on the road shoulder, next to a deep ditch, as there is no other safe spot or shelter available. Passengers getting off the bus are forced to step in the ditch which fills with water after heavy rain.”

The Minister responded to Ms McLeish’s request that “In the coming months, the Department of Transport (DoT) will upgrade the requested bus stop… As part of the work, lighting requirements will also be evaluated, and if required, DoT will install a solar sensor light at this bus stop.”

Ms McLeish continues, “Too often small regional towns can be put at the bottom of the priority list. It is a win for the Merton community to finally have this bus stop improved for the safety of all commuters.”

“The bus route is the only form of public transport available in Merton. It is important to ensure it is easily accessible and safe for travellers,” Ms McLeish concludes.
