Push for fog warning signs continues

State Liberal Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish is continuing the push for electronic fog warning signs to be installed in the Kinglake Ranges following calls on the government made in the Parliament in March.

“Since calling on the Minister for Roads to install electronic fog signs in Kinglake I have received a response stating the current static signs are good enough and that motorists should ‘drive to the conditions’,” Ms McLeish said.

Ms McLeish said the Minister relied on data collected by VicRoads to make the decision which show there have only been four minor incidents on Whittlesea-Kinglake Road since 2010.

“Local emergency services volunteers know the Minister’s numbers are not correct and he should come to Kinglake to speak to them and see first-hand the situation. The roads in the region can be very dangerous when there is fog. Visitors in heavy and light vehicles are unaware of the sudden change in conditions that often happen in the ranges,” Ms McLeish said.

This week Ms McLeish was joined by Shadow Minister for Roads Ryan Smith MP to speak with local community members including representatives of the CFA, SES, CERT and Rotary.

“Having visited Kinglake and listened to the community’s concerns I know that this project is a no-brainer. The Minister should listen to the people who understand the conditions in the region and support them before there is a major incident,” Mr Smith said.

Ms McLeish concluded saying “I would like to thank the dedicated community leaders who are working to secure the warning signs. I am proud to be working with such committed volunteers to improve safety in the Kinglake Ranges.”
